Understanding Bouncy Castle Hire Prices and Deposit Rules

What Really Drives the Cost of a Bouncy Castle Hire

If you have ever phoned three different inflatable hire firms and come away with three very different quotes, you are not alone. Bouncy castle hire prices in the UK typically start around £70 for a small castle on a weekday and climb past £300 for a large inflatable slide or assault course at peak times. The gap between quotes is rarely random. It comes down to a handful of practical factors, and once you understand them you can budget with confidence rather than guesswork.

Most operators build their price from four things: the size and type of inflatable, the distance they have to travel, the day and season you have chosen, and whether you want to keep it overnight. Add a refundable deposit on top and you have the full picture.

Size, Shape and Theme: The Inflatable Itself

A standard 12ft by 12ft bouncy castle suits roughly six to eight primary-age children at a time and is the cheapest option on any price list. Everything above that scales upward.

  • Small castles (8ft–10ft): often £60–£90, ideal for toddlers and small gardens.
  • Standard castles (12ft–15ft): typically £80–£130 for a day hire.
  • Large castles and combos (15ft+ with slide or roof): around £130–£200.
  • Inflatable slides, obstacle courses and assault courses: £180–£350, because they need more blower power, more anchoring and often two people to set up.

Themed inflatables — dinosaurs, princesses, football, disco domes with lights and sound — usually carry a small premium of £10–£30. If you are hiring for a nursery, school fete or community event, ask about multi-day or multi-item rates; two inflatables booked together are often cheaper than two separate bookings.

Delivery Distance, Access and Set-Up

Delivery is where quotes quietly diverge. Many firms include free delivery within a set radius, commonly 5 to 10 miles, then charge £1–£2 per mile beyond that. A firm 25 miles away may look cheaper on paper but add £30 in travel each way.

Access matters just as much. An inflatable needs a flat, clear area roughly 2ft larger than its footprint on every side, plus a safe distance from fences, sheds, ponds and overhanging branches. Ask yourself honestly:

  • Can the van park within a reasonable distance of the set-up spot?
  • Are there steps, narrow side gates or a steep slope?
  • Is there a working outdoor socket within about 25 metres for the blower?

If the answer to any of these is awkward, mention it when booking. Some firms charge a small surcharge for stairs or long carries, and a few will decline the job — far better to find out on the phone than on the morning of the party.

Weekend Demand, School Holidays and Overnight Keep

Saturdays between May and September are the busiest slots in the calendar. Many operators apply a weekend rate that is £10–£25 higher than a weekday, and bank holidays or the first warm weekend of the year can push prices higher still. If your party falls on a Sunday, you may find it cheaper than Saturday simply because demand is lower.

Overnight keep is a popular add-on and usually costs £20–£40. It means the castle stays inflated — or is left deflated and re-inflated — so you can use it again the next morning, and the firm collects it the following day. It is worth every penny for a weekend party, but check whether your insurance and the hire agreement cover unsupervised overnight use, and never leave a blower running unattended in the rain.

Deposits, Bonds and What "Refundable" Actually Means

You will usually encounter two separate payments, and mixing them up causes most of the confusion.

A booking deposit secures your date. It is often £20–£50 or around 20% of the hire fee, and it is normally deducted from your final balance rather than returned. Cancel with reasonable notice — commonly 14 days — and many firms will move it to another date; cancel at 48 hours' notice and you may lose it.

A refundable damage bond is different. This is a separate sum, typically £30–£100, held against loss or damage and returned after the inflatable is collected and inspected. Some firms take it in cash on the day, others place a card hold. Expect the refund within three to five working days, and ask upfront about the specific conditions — excessive mud, silly string, pet damage, or a missing anchor set can all eat into it.

Building a Realistic Party Budget

For a typical Saturday garden party in summer, a sensible working figure is £120–£160 all in: around £100 for a standard castle with local delivery, £25 for overnight keep, and a £50 bond that comes back to you. Add £20–£30 if you are more than ten miles from the depot, or if you want a themed or larger inflatable.

Ask for the total payable on the day, the deposit amount, the cancellation terms and the collection window in one go. A good hire company will answer all four without hesitation — and that transparency is often a better indicator of quality than the headline price.
